Theater at Cheshire Academy

Our courses include Acting I and II, Public Speaking, and Performance I, II, and III for advanced acting study. Performance students present a variety of short plays in “out of the box” locations across the campus. An exciting new course developed is called Playwrights; students in the class explorie a wide variety of contemporary American plays through storytelling and script-in-hand readings. Also, for those interested in pursuing theater and performing arts at the college level, independent study courses may further allow you to explore your chosen art form. Cheshire grads have continued on to study acting at top-tier performing arts programs across the country.

For those who would like to try out for a play while at Cheshire Academy, auditions are held for each afterschool season. We produce comedies, dramas, and musical theater in both full-length and one-act formats. In addition, dancers can gather in our new studio for afterschool classes in both modern dance and ballet. CA dancers have had opportunities to perform in our musical theater productions.

So engage in character study based on the soliloquies of Shakespeare; write your own monologues derived from Mask work; or create a cast of characters based on center of gravity. Whatever your interest may be, we’re here to help you learn about yourself and explore newfound passions, both on and off the stage.

Program Highlights

  • The Varsity Players Afternoon Activity

Dedicated actors and actresses are invited to participate in the Varsity Players, an afternoon activity offered in the fall, winter, and spring. A string of rehearsals culminates each season in a performance in the Black Box Theatre, many of which are performed to a full house. Each production includes numerous contributions from non-performing students who work on lighting, sound, set design, and even choreography.

While many private schools require students participating in a drama club to also compete in a team sport, Cheshire Academy recognizes the teamwork, effort, and dedication required to successfully perform in front of an audience. Because of this, performers may substitute one of their three athletic requirements for the Varsity Players.
  • IB Theatre

One of the few private schools in CT to offer IB Theatre, Cheshire Academy’s International Baccalaureate Program Theatre Course emphasizes the technical skills and dedication necessary for performance. With focuses in script writing, lighting, scenography, and production, students in the IB Theatre course can expect to exit the course with a solid understanding of theatre in the making, in the performance, and in the world.
  • Alumni Actors and Actresses

Many well-respected actors and actresses have grown through the Cheshire Academy Theater program, including James Van Der Beek, star of Dawson’s Creek, Friends with Better Lives, and CSI: Cyber. Our performers can take advantage of our vast alumni network by attending workshops with visiting alumnae or networking during Reunion Weekend, held every year in May.
