CHESHIRE — Bryce Sebastian ’19 and Malachi Burby ’19 both signed with high-level Division I football programs on National Signing Day on Dec. 19.

Sebastian inked a National Letter of Intent to play at Boston College of the ACC, while Burby is headed to Rutgers of the Big 10 Conference. They join a long list of Cheshire Academy student-athletes who have gone on to play college football. The Academy has produced 63 college football players since 2012.

“In the classroom, it definitely prepared me for college,” Burby said. “They expect more out of you which is important. On the field, playing against good competition has definitely prepared me for going up against some of the best players in college football. I learned things about the recruiting process from coach Dykeman. Cheshire Academy was a great experience for me overall.”

Burby, a defensive tackle from Berlin (CT), finished with 60 tackles, 9.5 sacks and a fumble recovery last season. He joins Sam Vretman ’17 who is now at Rutgers.

Meanwhile, Sebastian, a wide receiver from West Haven (CT), suffered an injury in the Cats season opener and missed the rest of the season. A dynamic playmaker, Sebastian had 630 yards of total offense and seven touchdowns as a junior. Sebastian joins three former Cats at Boston College. His brother, Brandon Sebastian ’17, Ryan Whittelsey and CJ Lewis ’17 all play for the Eagles, who were in the Top 25 this season.

“This is the day we all wait for,” Sebastian said. “The chance to sign and officially be a part of the BC family feels great.”

Burby and Sebastian will be opponents on Sept. 21, 2019, when Boston College travels to take on Rutgers.

Several more Cheshire Academy football players will join Sebastian and Burby, and sign their NLIs on the next National Signing Day, Feb. 6.

“Just to see these guys achieve their dreams, to know our part in it, that it really was a partnership, is special,” Cheshire Academy head football coach David Dykeman said. “It’s the community of the school, the academic program, our coaching staff and incredible families. That’s what makes this so special. I’m so proud of them both. To say we have a kid going to play in the ACC and the Big 10, and building that legacy is incredible for them and our program, and it speaks volumes of the work of so many people.”

Cletus Mathurin ’19, a defensive lineman from Hartford who earned All-New England honors this past season, signed his NLI off campus to play at UMass. He will be honored at Cheshire Academy at a later date. Dillon Harris ’17, a linebacker, also signed with UConn on Dec. 19.
