CHESHIRE – Members of Cheshire Academy’s 225th graduating class received their diplomas on June 1 during the school’s historic commencement.
There were 106 seniors who were honored under a large tent on Slaughter Field.
“When I’m asked what I love most about CA, I say the warm, welcoming, supportive community,” Valedictorian Kamila Zygadlo said. “I’ve learned so much from all of you. Curiosity, integrity and courage – I hope we will all take that from our time here. Be curious, have integrity and be courageous.”

Roberto S. Goizueta, a celebrated theologian and the Margaret O’Brien Flatley Professor Emeritus of Catholic Theology at Boston College, delivered the keynote address on Saturday. His father, Roberto C. Goizueta, a 1949 Cheshire Academy graduate and former CEO of Coca-Cola, was Cheshire Academy’s keynote speaker at the school’s Bicentennial Commencement in 1994.
“Inclusivity, humility, integrity, courage,” said Goizueta, addressing the Class of 2019. “These are values that define a Cheshire Academy education and they’re values that defined the Cheshire alumnus whom I knew as my Dad.”
In the biography of the elder Goizueta titled, “I’d Like the World to Buy A Coke” he said he regretted leaving two things behind when he fled Cuba. They were his Yale diploma and the Webster Dictionary he received when he was valedictorian at Cheshire Academy in 1949. Head of School Julie Anderson presented the younger Goizueta with a commemorative 1949 Webster Dictionary in honor of his father.
“One by one, you, the Class of 2019, can begin to craft the next chapter in history,” said Anderson during her closing remarks. “I encourage you to take the academic risks you have learned here and believe in your capacity to enact change and have a positive impact on others. We are all counting on you. And I know for certain that you will not let us down.”
Cheshire Academy is celebrating its 225th anniversary this year. The Academy is the oldest boarding school in the New England and 10th oldest in the country. Cheshire Academy’s students hail from 29 countries, 13 states and 20 Connecticut towns.
