From academics to athletics, Cheshire Academy's PG program takes you where you want to be.

The postgraduate (PG) year is a great opportunity for students to build their skills, improve their academic portfolio, and prepare for college. Cheshire Academy offers a robust academic experience designed to transition students from traditional high school to a college curriculum. The college counseling team offers an intense program designed to take all postgraduates through the college admission process.

The living and learning experience that postgraduate boarding students experience enhances their transition from high school to college. Postgraduates live together in community where a residence life curriculum adds to their overall experience.

Outside of the academic core curriculum, PGs at Cheshire Academy have the option to participate on our New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) sanctioned athletic teams.  If students are interested in a postgraduate year for college recruitment, we encourage them to explore our athletic team pages and fill out our prospective student athlete form. Cheshire Academy coaches work to gain exposure for our talented athletes, resulting in a high placement record for many alumni athletes.

  • The Academic Experience

Cheshire Academy believes the coursework for PGs should be meaningful advanced work that enhances and furthers a student’s academic profile, which is why The Director of College Counseling and the Academic Dean work closely together with the student and his or her family to create a schedule that meets his or her needs.

PG students interested in athletics work can expect an academic schedule that will allow for further intellectual growth and the completion of NCAA approved coursework which will count toward meeting the requirements for Division 1 sports programs and college academic entrance.

The PG Seminar course is a specialized program of study that is required of all postgraduates. The Seminar includes SAT/ACT test preparation sessions, college application completion, the writing of college essays, and discussions regarding college financial aid and scholarships among other admission related topics. The college counselors will facilitate approximately half of the PG Seminar sessions for the first two months of the school year.

In addition to the college admission sessions, the PG Seminar will also include class time devoted to public speaking and financial and economic related topics. The course meets four times per week for the entire school year. Students receive a letter grade in academics and effort as well as a full credit for passing the course, which appears on the student’s transcript.
  • The Community Life Experience

Specific advisors are assigned to groups of post graduates and will be involved not only in their academic and community experience, but also as part of  group identity building activities which are organized by group leaders and are considered part of the required post graduate curriculum.

Since post graduates are high school graduates and often chose to attend Cheshire Academy rather than accept a college offer of admission, we believe they should have a different set of rules than other students, including different quiet hours, study hours, and extended late lights or bedtime hours. To accommodate these rule differences, all post graduates live in the same residence.

In addition, post graduate advisors and the Community Life work together to schedule off campus activities such as volunteering, bowling nights, communal meals off campus, group projects, lending to the bonding and sense of pride shared by the PGs. PG advisors participate in these group activities, as well.
